Worth Reading on a Quiet Weekend...

I’m working on a few things that will be posted over the course of the week, including a collaboration on a fictional hockey short story with two extremely talented writers that you’ve seen on this site, Gus Katsaros and Adam Kirshenblatt. In the meantime I wanted to share two links for those who are online during this last long weekend of the summer..

By now every Kings fan with an Internet connection has likely heard of Daily News writer Rich Hammond and knows about his site that takes the reader “Inside the Kings”. I think it’s worth mentioning the site again because his latest series of posting is a must-read for all hockey fans.

Imagine a writer with a direct pipeline to the team’s General Manager who is willing to field questions from his readers to pose to the GM. Then imagine a General Manager who is open, honest, articulate and extremely in-depth with the writer and willing to provide riveting answers to interesting questions. Then imagine a writer who takes the time to transcribe every word of the interview - almost 4000 words - instead of just glossing over the highlights in a short piece.

Fortunately for hockey fans we don’t have to imagine that scenario because we have Rich Hammond and Dean Lombardi.

Here’s the links to all three parts of the interview. Be sure to bookmark the site because content like this is posted on a regular basis and for those of us who like to try and get inside the head of a General Manger and see what he is thinking it really is a unique read.

The other series of postings I wanted to mention was by James Mirtle, a writer you’ve probably read in the Globe and Mail, FanHouse, McKeen’s or elsewhere.

James attended the NHLPA meetings in Toronto this week and spoke to Mathieu Schneider, Eric Lindros, Chris Chelios and Shawn Horcoff among others. You can get some great quotes on his site here:

Mr. Mirtle is also running a yahoo hockey pool for hockey writers/bloggers and if it goes well I’ll provide updates throughout the year on my team and maybe throw in some fantasy tips. I’ve been looking for a good competitive league to join so it should be fun although I haven’t been in a head-to-head hockey league before so if I get off to a slow start there’s my excuse. If it really doesn’t go well this may be the last you hear about it.

For those going back to school on Tuesday, enjoy your final day of freedom. The summer may be over but on the bright side we'll soon have competitive hockey - something I thought we'd have this past week until I saw Team Russia in the Super Series..
