The Islanders have signed defenseman David Quenneville to a three-year, entry-level contract. The 20-year-old will report to Bridgeport on Saturday.

Quenneville had a monster year for Medicine Hat (WHL), scoring 26 goals, 54 assists in 70 games. The 80 points led all WHL defensemen.

The knock on Quenneville is his size, 5'8", 190 lbs. He is a very good skater with a ton of hockey sense.

Ironically, a good NHL player comparison for Quenneville is Jared Spurgeon, who the Islanders drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 draft. Garth Snow failed to sign the 5-foot-9 defenseman who has had a nice career in Minnesota.

David is the second cousin of Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville and the nephew (by marriage) of Johnny Boychuk.
