Some updates on the Icebreakers article that ran yesterday at NHL.com:
*
Henrik Zetterberg has had to take himself out of the team. The Red Wings did not want him playing in the two charity games, due to a back injury.
* Samuel Påhlsson is also out, due to an abdominal strain.
* Veteran defenseman Mattias Norström is in.
* Defenseman Victor Hedman, a potential top-three pick in the 2009 draft, is joining the team.
*
Peter Forsberg, who has only skated once since his latest foot surgery will attempt to play in both games. He is slated to center a line with Markus Näslund and
Simon Gagne as his wingers.
He also addressed several injury- and contract-related questions. The responses broke no new ground, but more or less confirmed things said elsewhere recently:
-- He doubts that he'll be playing anywhere at the start of the season and there's no timetable to play. He will continue attempting to rehab his foot and until he feels like he can consistently play at a high level, he won't play. He doesn't want another season like last year or the second half of 2005-06.
-- He amended a June
statement that, if he continued playing, he anticipated signing either with one of his three prior NHL clubs (Colorado, Philadelphia, Nashville) or with Modo and didn't think a team change was likely (in Swedish: "Blir det spel i Europa blir det i Modo. Om jag stannar i NHL lutar det åt att det blir i någon av de tre klubbar jag spelat i. Något klubbyte tror jag inte blir aktuellt.")
He now
says "there are 31 teams in the picture-- all 30 NHL teams, plus Modo here at home. In other words, all doors are open." (in Swedish: "Det finns 31 klubbar med i bilden, 30 i NHL och så Modo här hemma. Helt öppet, alltså.")
He was asked specifically about rumors involving Detroit. He denied that he or his agent, Don Baizley, have had negotiations-- or even any substantive discussions -- with any NHL team and none are imminent with any club.
My personal view on this change in tune is that the Forsberg camp has realized that a return to Colorado is no slam dunk, the Flyers would first have to create significant cap space and shuffle personnel in the projected lineup and a large chunk of the core group he played with in Nashville is gone. So he needs to also consider other potentially viable options, such as Detroit.
