In June, the Florida Panthers signed young stud Nathan Horton to a 6 year, $24 million extension. $ 4 million per season.

Horton scored 31 goals and added 31 assists in 2006.

Yesterday, the price of a young scoring forward bounced up, when the Oilers signed Dustin Penner to a 5 year, $21.5 million offer sheet. $4.3 million per season.

This morning, Sabres centreman, Derek Roy, will walk into his Arbitration hearing, with a lot of confidence.

The comparables suggest that Roy is set to cash in. His offense makes his attractive. His Defensive prowess will make him a millionaire. The guy wins faceoffs at both ends of the ice and he was a +37 last season. He fed T Vanek, Max Afinogenov, and Drew Stafford.

Roy is a commodity, and the Sabres will have to pay him to keep him long term.

Roy scored 21 goals and added 42 assists in 06/07.

His offensive numbers are very similar to those of Horton and Penner.

What sets Roy apart from his peers is that he is an above average two-way centre, who kills penalties and plays the PP.

Roy has served his apprenticeship at the hand of Chris Drury. Now is his time to be a leader.

I've been told that Sabres GM, Darcy Regier, and Roy's agnt, Larry Kelly, have been having "productive conversations" since last weekend. The Penner matter certainly creates new urgency.

The two parties are scheduled to meet with the Arbitrator in Toronto later this morning.

I think the Sabres will get this deal done before the hearing begins.

Here's an interesting/ironic aside to consider....

Darcy Regier's son, Justin, presently sits three strokes behind the leader in the Porter Cup Tournament at Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston,NY. Justin fired a 62 (8 birds) on Thursday. He's 68-62 for 130, good for second place. The Porter Cup, for those not in the know, is one of the top amateur golf tournies in North America. The top amateurs and collegiates from the US and Canada converge on the Porter Cup each Summer.

Darcy can get the Roy deal done by 10am and still watch Justin's 1pm EDT tee off.

Beauty, eh?

Why would Darcy want to miss Justin's round today?
