1) Flyers general manager Ron Hextall confirmed that the team has invited undrafted Victoriaville Tigres (QMJHL) right winger Ivan Kosorenkov to attend rookie camp in September along with the organization's drafted prospects. This step was likely even if Kosorenkov was unimpressive in the recent Development Camp, which was not intended for player evaluation. It was, however, pretty much a foregone conclusion after Kosorenkov showed off sharpshooting ability and plus skating as strengths of his during Development camp drills. Despite going undrafted for a second-straight year, the 19-year-old Kosorenkov tallied 34 goals and 63 points last season in his first year in North American junior hockey.
2) As soon as the New Jersey Devils announced Nico Hischier's entry-level contract at the rookie maximum, it was inevitable that the Nolan Patrick camp and the Flyers would finalize their own deal at that level. Yesterday, the Flyers announced Patrick's signing. As per organization policy, no terms were released. However, it is known that the three-year deal carries the maximum $925,000 base salary plus a $92,500 signing bonus plus a maximum of $2.65 million in performance bonuses.
How this works cap-wise: Assuming Patrick is in the NHL next season rather than being assigned back to the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings and having his contract "slide", the Flyers will carry a $925,000 cap hit. At the end of the season, whatever bonuses he collects will be added into the Flyers final cap spending. Any overages on the cap ceiling would be penalized as dead space on the team's available space for 2018-19.
Patrick, who is rehabbing from sports hernia surgery, is expected to skate again at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ, on Wednesday. He also skated on Monday.
3) The one-year, two-way contracts recently signed by Lehigh Valley Phantoms goaltenders Anthony Stolarz and Alex Lyon scarcely varied from their restricted free agent qualifying offers tendered by the Flyers.
Stolarz was qualified at $761,250 on the NHL side of his deal but compromised on accepting $725,000 at the NHL level in exchange for the organization applying the difference to his AHL salary. Thus, he will make $95,000 at the American Hockey League level. Lyon, meanwhile, accepted his qualifying offer. He would receive $874,125 at the NHL level and $70,000 in the AHL.
The reason why Lyon's NHL base salary is higher than Stolarz's is that the Flyers had to sign Lyon to a higher entry-level contract when he left Yale. He had negotiating leverage as a highly sought free agent that the drafted Stolarz (2nd round, 2012 Draft) did not have when he signed his ELC. As such, the qualifying offer for Lyon on his second NHL contract was also higher than Stolarz's.
4) The third annual Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp in Atlantic City will be held Aug. 18-21. As with the first two years, the camp has sold out well in advance of its start date. Sadly, one gentleman who will not be there this year is Lou Lumi.
Mr. Lumi, a friend to a host of Flyers Alumni and an inspiration to many people, lost a seven-year battle with cancer. During his struggle, Mr. Lumi worked tireless to raise money for cancer research through his Stick Gloves Shirt charity foundation. He also attended Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp annually. Hocky was a passion, a catharsis and even a therapy for Mr. Lumi. Every time he stepped on the ice himself and every time he watched the Flyers or the Flyers Alumni play one more game, it was a triumph.
Condolences go out to Mr. Lumi's family and many friends.
