Just tracked down Wally Roenick, one of the truly "fun" guys on the road. J.R.'s dad.

Wally's boat is docked in Newport, R.I. Thought J.R. might be there.

"No here," Wally said.

Wally was working on a cold one. Told him J.R. text me and said he was was retiring.

“He was up at the Cape two weeks ago and he had not made up his mind at that point,” Wally told me. "I know he has some other things he’d like to do but it’s news to me.”

Weather is miserable in New England. Wally's boat is docked for the night. He's not sailing for a day or so.

“I guess I better call him,” Wally said. “Of course, the message on his phone is always, ‘it’s better to text message me.’ ”

J.R. text messaged me this morning:

“I’m retiring; is that still news?”

I think it is ... Still have not gotten him or his wife, Tracy, but I did leave messages.

Jeremy Roenick will announce his retirement shortly ... I will update later ...

One of the great American hockey players who never won a Stanley Cup. He came OHHH so close in '04. If the Flyers had beaten the Tampa Bay Lightning, they would have beaten Calgary in the Final and J.R. would have had his Cup.
