The Latest on Briere is...Word has it that yesterday was a busy day for the Briere camp. Something could break today. I would not be shocked at all.
The only team that can probably sign two big free agents out there is...The LA Kings. They could be a serious force in a few short days. They are looking to add defense. Sheldon Souray is once again the word on the street (e3)
The quietest team so far on the Rumour Mill is...The Blue Jackets. No one has a real beat on the new GM and what direction he is looking yet...I am getting emails from people asking me if I am ignoring them. The answer is no, I am just not getting much yet.
The UFA that could be had for 1 million bucks who could have the biggest impact that hardly anyone knows ...Jeff Hamilton...he quietly had 19 goals and 20 assists in 70 games playing limited time in Chicago. He was also only a -4 on a team with big minus players.
The current line on Scotty Gomez is... There are teams willing to pay $8 million dollars for the guy. He has been seen running with Shanahan, so the Rangers are being speculated. The Flyers will be in that battle as well...As will the Islanders, Oilers, Senators, Avalanche and Wild. The interesting thing about Gomez demanding so much is that if you talk to some Devils players they don't believe he should get that much. "He is much better with Lou behind the bench" I have heard over and over..draw your own conclusions.
The current line on Chris Drury is... San Jose or LA. plain and simple. Some say the Rangers may get into that mix. IF the Sharks have to go as high as has been rumoured they will have to move Marleau to Montreal or Toronto. The time may be right, but the Sharks are playing roulette here by basically waiting to make that move until they see if Drury is in the fold...But what choice do they have really? The darkhorse is Florida, who although they have a very low cap number set, may make an exception..
The UFA that scored 36 goals you really should consider is... Bill Guerin. And word is that the Islanders and Devils are doing just that. I feel that should the Sharks not land Drury they will make a pitch as well. People look at Guerin not being a success in San Jose last year because of a lack of playoff scoring. I was fortunate enough to hang around the Sharks for a few days and Billy was a huge asset to the younger players and to Joe Thornton specifically. Plus there were points when the Sharks sagged where Guerin would go out and fly around the ice for a shift and get others to follow. This is the biggest need the Sharks have. Someone who can stop the bleeding and turn the tide when they start to stumble. The Sharks for some reason are quick to almost "feel sorry for themselves" at points. Of course this is one of Drury's strongest suits.
