Oilers Draft Update

I had a good conversation with Kevin Prendergast last night. Here are the tidbits:

*They interviewed 21 of the 100 prospects at the combine.

*Kevin Lowe is making a point of talking to all the teams ahead of the Oilers to feel them out.

*Even if they don't move up, they feel that there are 8 solid top prospects...so they feel comfortable if they need to draft at 6.

*At #6 or higher they will pick the best player on their list...they will not go out of their way to fill any specific need. With their 2nd pick, however, they expect to be able to pick from 2 or 3 players and satisfy a specific need.

*They DID interview Cherepanov. "He sort of fell into everything we were scared of." The team WILL NOT draft him at #6 or higher. Later into the first round, he will become a consideration.

*If the Oilers had the 1st overall pick they would draft Patrick Kane, "we feel he's the closest player that's ready to step into the National Hockey League and play."
