One thing that many of you may not know about me is that I am big music fan. Many a night has been spent watching hockey with the mute on the television and my stereo providing the soundtrack. It makes the television experience a bit more like watching the game in person...because as we all know, a huge part of the live hockey experience is the music. Feeling the adrenaline rush as your team hits the ice for warm ups while a great song is blaring from the arena's sound system is amazing. They always seem to choose the best songs for specific moments in the game and the highlight vignettes that they show throughout the game. Sometimes you even hear something that you haven't heard before and scour the Internet searching for the song. That is what this blog is about...

I have compiled a list of songs that have either been a part of this past Penguins season or inspired by it. In going through that process I have been able to create a Penguin play list for myself. Here is the list and a couple of thoughts on each of the tracks. I hope that you all enjoy...I also hope that it is helpful, I know that there has been several occasions throughout the season where someone asked if I knew which song was playing at a specific point during the game...I think that these songs capture the essence of the team and it's fans...I would love your thoughts on the subject..

1. The Boys of Winter

What can be said about this song...it is the Penguins theme. There have been different versions over the years, but it has been part of the team as long as I can remember. I still get chills each game as the Penguins hit the ice.

2. Ladies and Gentlemen - Saliva

The Penguins made this their intro song about half way through the season and it fit perfectly. Most evenings the young guns drew the crowds undivided attention and put on one hell of a show.

3. Step Up - Drowning Pool

This song always gets me pumped up and it describes what each and every one of these upstart Penguins has done this season.

4. Are You Ready - Three Days Grace

These guys have become the official band of the Pittsburgh Penguins. They are huge fans of the team, and rushed through an opening set for Nickelback a few weeks ago to ensure that they made it to the Mellon Arena in time for a game. This particular song was used for a vignette early in the season promoting the young guns/players who were 25 and under.

5. The Energy - Audiovent

This song has been used as an intro and just speaks to the energy that these young Penguins bring to the table on a nightly basis.

6. Are You With Me - Vaux

This song served as the intro throughout the early part of the season and followed the Penguins "24" opening montage. It was a great way to get the building fired up and got a great response while it was used.

7. Youth Gone Wild - Skid Row

This 80's classic was used during the final home game of the season. That is exactly what these Penguins are...Youth Gone Wild! Obvious choice, but a good one.

8. Animal I Have Become - Three Days Grace

See above...this song is a staple during Penguins pregame warms ups. Always gets me pumped up...hope you all agree!

9. Gone Away - The Offspring

Was actually used over the past few years for different montages and vignettes. Always reminds me of the being at the game...the team has also used "Defy You," which is what these guys are hoping to do to all the experts picking them for an early exit.

10. Times Like These - Foo Fighters

This song has been a staple in my Penguin memory since the town meeting that the team held back in summer of 2003. After all of the Penguin brass, including Mario Lemieux (who dealt with one more year chants all evening), were through addressing the crowd the team showed a montage of all of the youth who would make up the team during the next season...though it was shots of Ramzi Abid, Rico Fata and Guillaume Lefebvre it still took root. Be it the regular version or the acoustic, it always makes me think about how lucky we are to have had Mario, Jags, Crosby and this current group! Amazing...

11. When You Were Young - The Killers

This is another obvious one, but the team used it to celebrate Sidney Crosby at one point when he was selected the NHL's first star of the week during December.

12. Kick Start My Heart - Motley Crue

This song always gets me pumped up...when that Mick Mars guitar kicks in it just makes you want to see some fast skating and goalscoring! The Penguins used this in a couple of Marc Andre Fleury/Jocelyn Thibault vignettes throughout the season.

13. Back In Black - AC/DC

A staple during Penguin pregame warm-ups. Loved it even more when the team started wearing their black jerseys at home.

14. Seek and Destroy - Metallica

This became the theme song of the Penguins power play throughout the season...especially as they made their run up to number 5 in the league rankings.

15. Crowd Chant - Joe Satriani

This is the mystery song that many Penguin fans were wondering about...it typically played at the beginning of the third period. Gotta love some guitar.

16. My Hero - Foo Fighters

This song was used in a Mark Recchi tribute after he hit several career milestones. The team has also used it for Mario tributes...

17. Wait - Earshot

This is a staple during the Penguins pregame warm up. I love this song...it is best played loud!

18. Prayer Of The Refugee - Rise Against

This song always reminds me of the Penguins and their fans. We have all been through a lot over the past few years of losing and this is our time to stand on our own!

19. Home Sweet Home - Motley Crue

Our Penguins are Home Sweet Home for good. This was used during the pregame ceremony the day the arena deal was announced.

Hope that you guys enjoyed this...please check out the songs...
