The Woo Report (Playoff Edition): Devils/Lightning series

The Devils start the playoffs with Lou Lamoriello and company behind the bench like last year. The Devils have a great combination of players with Stanley Cup winning experience. And so do the Tampa Bay Lightning. This will be a great match up.

I would give the edge to the New Jersey Devils for having a better momentum heading into the playoffs. The Devils are just getting hot after slumping for most of March. The Lightning got blown out by Florida, while knowing the division crown was on the line, and beaten in a shootout against Atlanta. Without a doubt, Martin Brodeur is ready to win more cups and expect a MVP like performance against Lecavalier and St. Louis.

New Jersey WOO Effect:

John Madden and Jay Pandolfo: These guys do it all when it comes to shutting down top lines and penalty killing. And their track record by winning two cups shows that they will be a huge factor on shutting down Tampa’s top heavy superstar line.

Zach Parise, Travis Zajac, and Jamie Langenbrunner: The Zach Attack line has been on fire this season and has carried the team consistently all year. Langenbrunner has been clutch in the playoffs (remember Game 7 in Ottawa) and expect him to elevate his game. Zach Parise has shown signs of being a dagger in the hearts of his opponents. Expect this line to give equal or even better performance than the EGG line.

Tampa Bay WOO Effect:

Brad Richards and Ruslan Fedotenko: These guys have to produce if they want to give their top line some support and give the team scoring depth. Brad Richards is a Conn Smythe winner and expect him to give the team a jolt of enthusiasm when he skates every shift with a mission to win.

Dan Boyle: I never liked playing against this guy. He played a very good regular season and is a right handed defenseman. He is the quarterback of the power play and if the Devils find themselves in the box, expect him to cause Martin Brodeur and penalty killers trouble.

Predictions: Devils in 5. Yes, I said it. These games will be close though. This Devils team is on a mission and Lamoriello will be at the controls. Last year, they were more mentally exhausted by playing catch up and never got over Eric Staal’s last second goal during Game 2 against Carolina, the eventual Stanley Cup winner. This year, they are much better prepared and will have a healthy Colin White and Richard Matvichuk.
