Games like last night’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Florida Panthers are so frustrating. A tight-checking 2-0 lead heading into the last minute of play turns into an overtime game with a shootout that again shows why Filip Forsberg is the leading contender for the Calder so far this young season. The Nashville Predators gave away a point to a team that was thoroughly outworked, outplayed and especially outshot.

Give Florida netminder Roberto Luongo his due, he stopped 48 of 50 shots and continues to show the ability to steal games in an environment where he is unquestionably the man. A few breaks went the Preds way, all the result of hard work and just getting the puck on net. That’s one consistent from old coach to new coach… this team will not be outworked.

The Nashville power play continues to struggle in converting the chances they are creating, which have been plentiful. The PP units are showing improvement, but squandering a 1:31 5-on-3 advantage in the second period and not being able to finish a couple of golden chances needs to be fixed.

I have to admit, as someone who has watched this team from its infancy, it’s nice to pick at things that didn’t go well after a victory. I find myself doing this on a pretty regular basis. That is a good thing, it’s a peek of what this team should be able to do when it is firing on all cylinders. A true top line, a sniper or two, an all-star blueline and an all-world goaltender… it is a recipe for success in the NHL… and a little luck and dreams of late spring hockey may not be so unreachable.

Tuesday night’s opponent is the Los Angeles Kings, they are coming off a loss in Dallas. The Predators will practice today at Centennial. Keep in mind that the annual Second Harvest Food Drive is Tuesday at Bridgestone Arena beginning at 6am.

And here are your highlights from last night…

---------------------------------

Random Notes

- The Predators poured 50 shots on net last night.

- Twenty games into the season and the Predators have yet to lose back-to-back games.

- There was an AHL game in Syracuse last night, held at the Carrier Dome. The game set a new indoor attendance record for hockey as over 31,000 people came out to watch.

- How silly is the Toronto media? Let’s see what other crazy crap they can come up with… If I was an NHL player, I don’t know if I would want to deal with that mess.

- The Calgary Flames are nowhere near the doormat people expected this year… latest example is last night’s 5-4 comeback win over the Devils.

- Former Nashville Predator Kevin Klein is one of the nicest guys in hockey. He accepted a prom invite from a young Rangers fan yesterday… Good on ya Kevin!

- Four games tonight – Blues @ Jets, Habs @ NYR, Coyotes @ Ducks and Hawks @ Canucks.
