Though the Blue Jackets managed to get a point on Friday against the Bruins, on Saturday they left the ice losers for the second time in as many nights, and for the third game in a row.
While nobody questions the talent Columbus has on their team and that their future should be a good one, even the most optimistic are realizing their season may be a lost cause.
Injuries are a big reason why, obviously, but the Blue Jackets didn't do a very good job staying remotely in the race with all the bodies out, and it may be too late by the time the likes of Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Murray, among others, return to the lineup.
The Jackets are currently tied with Buffalo and Edmonton for last in the NHL and, though they're only seven points out of a playoff spot in the Metro division, the gap is bigger than it seems.
It usually takes 92-95 points to get into the playoffs. In order for Columbus to hit 92 and give themselves a 48% chance of making it (numbers via SportsClubStats) they'll need to go 35-19-8 the rest of the way.
That's a tall order for a team that is still beat up and has only won six of 20 games thus far.
This is certainly not how the Jackets wanted to build on what was the best season in franchise history, but the future still looks bright and a poor season (if this continues) will give them an opportunity to draft a star player come June.
Whether they make the playoffs or end up near the bottom of the standings, we know one thing: they're not going to give up.
