Potential For the Kings and Penguins to Come Together On a Deal?

Unfortunately today, word has come down that the NHL has suspended Slava Voynov indefinitely for an arrest related to domestic violence.

This comes on the heels of the NFL's big public mess involving domestic violence. The NHL is being proactive with Voynov in an effort to not garner the same negative public perception that has plagued the NFL in these types of issues.

Voynov is innocent until proven guilty and no details have been released about the arrest. That said:

He is suspended indefinitely and since we don't know how long that will be for, it potentially opens up a big hole on the Kings defense.

Why am I writing about this? The Penguins and Kings had discussions about Paul Martin, as recently as the draft this year.

Trading Paul Martin has its pros and its cons. The pros of trading him are that he has the potential to get the Penguins a top six winger. The cons include not having Paul Martin anymore and the difficulty of finding a trading partner who is looking for a rental D man while being able to give the Penguins win now parts in return.

If Voynov is out a long time perhaps a trade of two players in the last year of their contracts can help both teams.

Paul Martin for Justin Williams. I happen to think the value is there for both sides. It is probably one of few scenarios that makes sense.

The proposed deal isn't without its issues though. LA and Pittsburgh both do not have a lot of cap room and while the Penguins would be shaving off Martin's 5M cap hit, the Kings Williams only makes 3.65M. Some other maneuvers would need to be made to accommodate LA.

It is just food for thought on this Monday.

Score-Adjusted Fenwick percentage can be a very good predictive stat. Read how excellent it is at predicting playoff winners and who is off to a good/bad start this year.
