Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are on pace to join some pretty exclusive clubs in the history of the NHL this year. Both players are set to hit personal milestones that could push them further towards the doors of the Hockey Hall of Fame at some point after they decide to hang ‘em up. Of course you could argue the lack of Stanley Cups on their resume’s but good thing that’s not a definitive pre-requisite for entry into the Hall.

Thornton has a mere six points left to tally before he becomes the 46th player in NHL history to record 1,200 points. Only Jaromir Jagr has more points among active NHL players. Jumbo Joe is also eight goals away from 350 and 48 assists away from 900, which will make him only the 19th player in league history to record that many career assists. By the seasons end Thornton could climb as high as 35th on the all-time NHL points list. Thornton is already in the 1,000 point – 1,000 PIM club with 32 other players.

Patrick Marleau is one of the most underrated goal scorers around, past and present. Thirteen goals from now he’ll be the 59th player in NHL history to score 450 over his career. He also sits 22nd All-Time on the game winning goal list with 83. Currently 94th on the NHL’s All-Time points list, Marleau is 69 points away from hitting the 1,000 point mark for his career, a feat only accomplished by 79 other players. If he hits the mark he’ll join Marian Hossa, Patrik Elias and Martin St. Louis as the 2014-2015 class of 1,000. Marleau is also only 6 assists shy of 500 and he’s in line to play in his 1,300th NHL game this year, a feat accomplished only 55 other times.

Thornton and Marleau have built pretty impressive career’s during their time in the NHL and they’re about to reach some pretty impressive milestones; point, goal and assist totals that most kids only dream about reaching. The best part about Thornton and Marleau? They’re not done just yet. Both players had their highest assist totals since ‘09-’10, Marleau still hit 30+ goals and both recorded 70 points (Thornton 76).

Regardless of anything else, these two players are in line for a historic season on an individual level and one that is going to give the voters something to think about once 19 and 12 hang up their skates. These are special hockey players that have given a lot to the game over their careers and are still climbing up the ranks of NHL history.
