The Flames took on the Avalanche last night in a tilt that was untelevised and largely unseen by Flames fans.

Looking at the rosters beforehand, it looked like coach Hartley and the management staff were using the game as a bit of a measuring stick for the players on the bubble as the roster for the Flames was filled with names that you would expect to see in Adirondack for the bulk of the season.

The Avalanche on the other hand iced a squad that was largely made up of players that you would expect to see suited up on opening night. For those of us who listened along, the odds seemed stacked against the team in red and white.

The first period more or less went as expected. The Avalanche carried the play and generated the majority of the scoring chances, outshooting the Flames by a 13-5 margin. Luckily for the Flames, Karri Ramo appears to not be suffering any lingering effects from the hip issue that kept him out of earlier pre-season action, and Michael Ferland was able to capitalize on one of the Flames few scoring chances.

Despite being outplayed for the bulk of the period, the Flames went to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.

The second period proved to be much more even as the teams traded scoring chances throughout the period. Ryan O’Rielly evened things up for the Avs early in the first, but the Flames quickly answered as Michael Ferland scored his second of the night on a nice feed from Lance Bouma.

From there, the Flames goaltending took over and the visitor were able to hold off the home team, skating away with a 2-1 victory and improving their pre-season record to 3-3-0. The Avalanche are still looking for their first win of the pre-season and now sit at 0-4-1.

The story of the night really was Karri Ramo though. He only played the first 2 periods, but from all accounts, he was the difference maker in this game. Without his excellent play in net, Michael Ferland’s timely goal scoring might not have been enough to clench the win for the Flames.

Ramo’s clearly looking to make a statement with his play, trying to prove to management that his performance in the latter half of last season wasn’t an anomaly and that he deserves to be the starter moving forward.

Joni Ortio also played well in his one period of play, stopping all 13 shots directed his way in the third period.

The Flames will see the Avalanche again on Tuesday night as the team from Denver comes to town for the second part of the home and home match up.

This one will be televised on Sportsnet, and puck drops at 7pm MT.
