The Devils opened training camp on Thursday and, though Pete DeBoer said not to read too much into line combinations, he did give some hints at what we may see this season.

DeBoer told Devils beat writers he was looking for pairs that play well together more so than a three-man unit, which is in line with what he said last year at this time.

DeBoer last fall, via FireAndIce: “I like to work in pairs more than even lines. I thought Elias and Brunner had good chemistry. Not to minimize (Josefson’s) influence on that line, but I think at this point in training camp I’m looking more for pairs of guys and then we’ll fit in who goes with those guys as we go.”

Last year DeBoer loved the Travis Zajac-Jaromir Jagr combo, so they'll likely remain together all season.

He also seems curious about Patrik Elias and Martin Havlat playing together, so that could be a duo we see a lot of.

Going back to Zajac and Jagr, it is likely a safe bet Mike Cammalleri will be playing alongside them on the top line. Cammalleri had high praise for both, and seems quite enthused about the possibility.

Via FireAndIce: “It’s something I’m excited about, for sure,” said Cammalleri, who signed a five-year, $25 million contract with the Devils as an unrestricted free agent on July 1. “Travis is an exceptional player. He plays both ends so far. He just does so many good things out there. I haven’t been so familiar (with him) just playing out West a lot and not seeing so much of him and skating with him for the last couple of weeks I’ve just really been impressed with his skillset and his ability to make little plays and handle the puck and just the way you can see his game is.

“And then Jaromir brings all the cache that is himself. It was interesting today watching him just the classic way he likes to protect the puck. So, trying to feed off that and find openings and finding ways to get open to create some offense with him will be a lot of fun.”

I think that trio could really do some damage, so it'll be interesting to see how they mesh when they (presumably) play together in some preseason games.
