Justin Braun has himself a shiny new contract to the tune of $19 million over five years for an AAV of $3.8 million.

Braun has played parts of 4 seasons with the Sharks and has proven himself to be a steady, reliable, player in his own end which resulted in his ice-time being second on the team at 20:59/g. He also ranked 2nd on the Sharks in blocked shots (146), behind only Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

This deal adds Braun to the core group of players that San Jose wants to keep around for the foreseeable future and gives the scouting staff a gold star for taking him 201st overall in the 7th round.

Braun isn’t going to score 10 goals but he does provide the stability on the back end that helps keep pucks out of the Sharks net, a valuable tool in the Sharks conservative defensive system. His stats compare to Vlasic’s in the goals against categories with Braun having a GA On/60 of 1.90 and a GA Off/60 of 2.40 whereas Vlasic has a GA On of 1.83 and a GA Off/60 of 2.46; further evidence of a sound defensive game.

Considering the term of the deal it seems as though Braun is going to play a significant role for the Sharks and that makes this a cap friendly venture that allows the Sharks to keep other players (Demers) around when contracts expire.

Braun saw regular action against some of the opposing teams’ best players last year and put up good defensive numbers and he most likely will be expected to do the same this year. He’s an excellent skater that makes very few mistakes while being yet another underrated defenseman wearing teal. This deal was about continuing to establish a core group moving forward and keeping the theme of defense first within the organization.
