Snider Has a New Word: Patience

The Chairman paid a visit to Skate Zone this weekend.

Ed Snider, free of cancer since mid-August, dropped by to chat with Ron Hextall and Paul Holmgren.

Snider had quite a few things to say to the media, as well.

There was an unusually long rant about how he perceives his clubs have been "snake bitten" since last winning a Stanley Cup - 1975.

Injuries, concussions, player meltdowns in goal, etc.

“Look, we’re snake bitten for some [bleeping] reason," he said.

None of you want to hash through the last 40 years of frustration, even if it comes from Snider himself.

But I also found it refreshing that Snider talked about Hextall teaching him and the organization to be "patient."

The one criticism you can make about the Flyers is that they have forever tried the "win now" every season, forking over prospect and draft picks and giving up on young players before they bloom if they make a deal that brings them closer to a Stanley Cup now, even if turns out later it was a far-sighted dream.

Snider said he is learning to sit back and let things unfold naturally, thanks to Hextall, who has already stated he is not going to push any of his defensive prospects - Samuel Morin, Shayne Gostisbehere or Robert Hagg _ to make the Flyers roster this season out of camp.

“I think Ron has established a philosophy that is probably long overdue," Snider said. "I probably have been a little too anxious to win a Cup.

"I was very patient when I was young and we built the winners. We let the other five teams trade away draft picks and some of their top kids and we didn’t do that.

"We were not successful the first, four or five years and then we were the best. Ron Hextall has done a good job in my opinion in establishing what we want to do for the future."

Hextall's message to him Saturday was the same he's given publicly - patience.

“He says we have to be patient," Snider said. "He’s the boss. We got a lot of great, young players and you don’t want to rush them along too quickly.

"We have a great setup in Allentown. Everything, for our young guys is going to be so much better than it has been. That’s very important."

Let's see it plays out this way but again, my hunch has been, the Flyers will wait on their top d-prospects.
