In an effort to build a 53-man roster prior to training camp opening up, the Devils have extended camp invites to veteran forwards Ruslan Fedotenko and Jordin Tootoo.

Fedotenko, 35, is looking to establish himself as an NHLer once again after spending a year overseas while Tootoo, 31, is looking to bounce back after a couple poor seasons in Detroit.

Fedotenko had seven goals and 17 points in 47 games last season with Donbass HC of the KHL. Tootoo, on the other hand, had 19 combined points in 62 games split between Detroit and Grand Rapids, with the significantly larger half of the games being spent in the AHL.

Both have been effective in the past, but I wonder how much they have left in the tank. I think they may be serviceable in 4th line roles, but with 14 forwards signed to one-way deals, Scott Gomez getting an invite and the team still hoping to re-sign Ryan Carter, it'll be very tough for them to crack the 23-man roster; especially when you factor in Reid Boucher and Stefan Matteau.

Ultimately I don't see either of them making the team but, again, competition in camp is never a bad thing, and the Devils have a lot of it.
