Scott Gomez and Tomas Kaberle won't be the only unsigned free agents attending New Jersey Devils training camp.

Renat Mamashev, who spent last season playing in the Kontinental Hockey League, will also be in New Jersey when camp opens in a couple weeks time.

Mamashev is a 31-year-old defenseman who has played his entire pro career in Russia. He spent a year in Moose Jaw (WHL) during the 2000-01 season, but went overseas after that and never returned.

At 6'1" and almost 200 pounds, Mamashev has decent size for a defenseman. He scored five goals and added 12 points while piling up 12 penalty minutes in 32 games with Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk last season.

He may have more offense to his game than he showed last year, though, as in 2012-13 he scored 10 goals and record 42 points as well as 72 penalty minutes in 52 games.

Once Eric Gelinas re-signs the Devils will have seven NHL defensemen on their roster. Add Kaberle (tryout) and top prospect Damon Severson to the mix, and Mamashev seems like a long shot to make the team.

I could see him getting a two-way deal if he performs well and that's something he's open to, though we'll see in due time.

Some other camp notes:

- Unless something changes, Ryan Carter will be at Devils camp whether he has a contract with the team or not.

- Anthony Brodeur will be at main camp, but he'll go back to Gatineau as the team's starter this season.

- Prospects Damon Severson, Ben Thomson and Ben Johnson, all of whom played junior last year, will be at camp.
