When Martin Brodeur tested free agency in July, it seemed like a safe bet to say his playing days with the Devils were over.
While Cory Schneider, fresh off his long-term extension, is the undisputed No. 1 goaltender going forward, Brodeur returning to be his backup may not be as far fetched as many (myself included) think.
TSN's Darren Dreger suggested though Brodeur hasn't signed yet, several teams have kicked the tires and the Devils may be among them.
When the Devils brought back Scott Clemmensen and openly said he'd compete with Keith Kinkaid for the backup spot, I figured the door on Brodeur returning was closed.
That a high profile hockey insider like Dreger even mentions Brodeur returning with the Devils leads me to believe it's not out of the realm of possibility.
I still think it's unlikely, but this is definitely something to watch as Brodeur remains without a contract just a couple weeks away from training camp.
