As the new season approaches, Lou Lamoriello continues to take care of housekeeping to get the Devils - both New Jersey and Albany - ready for the upcoming year.
Lamoriello's latest move has been signing defenseman Dan Kelly to a two-year, two-way contract extension.
Kelly, 25, had 17 points and 86 penalty minutes in 71 regular season games with Albany last season.
Kelly's contract will carry a $562K cap hit if he plays in New Jersey, though it's unlikely he gets a look at any point over his contract.
At this point in his career he probably won't take a big step forward, so he'll probably be an AHLer for life. If not anything else, he'll provide some depth for Albany. He's a serviceable replacement for the higher pairings should New Jersey need to pluck some defensemen above him on the depth chart if they run into injury problems.
