With training camp set to begin in less than three weeks time, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has extended invites to Scott Gomez and Tomas Kaberle to help fill out their camp roster, according to Tom Gulitti.
Gomez, 34, and Kaberle, 36, are two former stars whose careers have gone downhill, and as such they have resulted to accepting a tryout in hopes of earning a roster spot, and extending their NHL careers.
Gomez had 12 points in 46 games with the Florida Panthers in 2013-14 while averaging just over 13 minutes of ice, while Kaberle posted 24 points in 48 games with Kladno of the Czech league.
Both Gomez and Kaberle will enter camp as long shots to make the team. If not anything else, they'll provide more competition to the Devils' young players and force them to earn their roster spots rather than having vacant spots handed to them.
I'll go more in-depth tomorrow, but I will say this: competition in camp is never a bad thing.
