Hey Joe

The San Jose Sharks, in the wake of making the playoffs for 9 straight years with Joe Thornton on the team, have decided that their Captain has, yet again, been dragging the team down. Now you’ll recall they already played this card once before when Jumbo Joe got the C in the first place. Marleau, the heartless stoic and chronic weird smile face maker that he is, wasn’t “leadery” enough for the Team’s liking and after a year with Rob Blake wearing the C they made Joe the Captain in 2010.

Well it was a big disaster. The team since then went 167-92-35 and finished in the top 2 places in their Division 3 times in 4 years. It obviously isn’t good enough. Individually it’s been worse. Joe Thornton is only 11th in NHL scoring from the time he took over the Captain’s role in San Jose to now with 263 points. He’s washed up. At 35 years old he BARELY made it to 13th in NHL scoring. BARELY.

Now the team, through mainstream voices like Darren Dreger, is making it clear that not only will this loafer not have a C or an A on his chest, but he’s going to have to EARN a spot on the team. I mean, Dreger quite literally said, if Thornton plays like a 4th liner then he’ll be a 4th liner. Now maybe this is more of a reaction to his miserable playoff performances, in which he has only scored 100 points in 132 games.

It’s clear the Sharks are better off without him and his garbage leadership has taken them nowhere.

It’s time to move on, San Jose. Big Joe has failed you.

As luck would have it, the Oilers are in need of a 2C and it is just possible that Joe Thornton might be good enough to be a 2C on a bad team like the Oilers. I mean, it’s not possible on a great team like the Sharks, but in Edmonton he could prolong his dwindling career for sure.

I’m not sure anybody would even want him anymore, but I’d be willing to part with more than a few pieces to get him. The only thing holding him back would be his willingness to waive his No-Trade Clause to come to chilly Edmonton.

In all honesty I would be perfectly fine offering the Oilers leading Goal Scorer David Perron and Edmonton’s 1st Round pick in this coming draft for Thornton. It’s a real offer of a solid younger, cheaper player and a potentially high pick for Jumbo Joe. He doesn’t want to play here I’m sure, but I’d make the offer anyway. At the very least I don't think San Jose would hang up and laugh.

What would you part with to get Thornton?
