Vancouver Canucks: Linden on Air, Should Canucks Sign Dustin Penner?

The big news for Tuesday: Trevor Linden will be appearing on TEAM1040 for two hours today, co-hosting with Matt Sekeres as part of "President's Week."

His appearance starts at 11 a.m. and he'll be taking calls and questions starting at noon. Could be worth tuning in to see if there's any new perspective on the 2014-15 Vancouver Canucks.

I'll try to catch as much as I can, then post about it tomorrow.

Now, on to even more important topics...

The_Kuze suggested yesterday that the Canucks adopt Fall Out Boy's "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up) as their new goal song for next season. I agree—I'd love to see it incorporated into Vancouver's game presentation.

That track was used quite a bit by the NHL last season and really grew on me. It was played only occasionally at Rogers Arena but has all the elements of a perfect sports anthem and could be used as a goal song or to welcome the teams onto the ice.

Have a listen:

I certainly hope that "change is coming" from the game presentation department next season. Would be really nice to get some fresh music with more rock n' roll and less screeching EDM. Country music is also a genre on the rise these days—full of big, upbeat anthems, party messaging and rock guitars. Let's get some of that into the mix!

Who's Left on the Free Agent Market?

After Daniel Winnik's signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, the pickings are getting pretty slim for teams looking to sign unrestricted free agents this summer.

With 23 players on their main roster and just $1.4 million in cap space according to CapGeek.com, the Canucks look like they're basically set to start the season.

Jacob Markstrom clouds the issue a bit: it's unlikely that they'll carry three goalies, so Markstrom's roster spot will likely become available, though his $1.2 million cap hit won't if he ends up being sent down to Utica.

Most likely, that spot will go to one of the youngsters. Nicklas Jensen's not even on the CapGeek roster. But if they wanted to bring in one more body, who should it be?

CapGeek's UFA finder does offer some possibilities. Daniel Alfredsson's out of consideration—he's either going to re-sign with the Red Wings or retire.

But what about Dustin Penner? He had a nice resurgence during his time with the Anaheim Ducks last season, with 32 points in 49 games and five power play goals. He's a prairie boy who's huge at 6'4" and 246 pounds, which fits Jim Benning's "meat and potatoes" approach. Penner has also played most of his hockey in the Pacific Division through his career.

After winning Stanley Cups with both the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings, Penner should be highly motivated to play hard against two of Vancouver's biggest rivals, who both gave up on him.

I think Penner could be an interesting addition to the forward group if the Canucks could make the money work.

What do you think?

If there's another name on the UFA list that you think would suit the Canucks even better, let us know in the comments. Idle speculation—that's what summer is for!
