Eklund had a rumor up today about the possibility of Martin Brodeur coming to Washington, either as a possible invitee to Caps Training Camp or a possible mid-season addition if the Caps find themselves in need of veteran help.

It's an interesting possibility, having Brodeur come to D.C. and give Braden Holtby some help if the young netminder ends up having issues. Holtby, in my opinion, is ready for his (next) big break, and having a stronger defense in front of him and a much better goaltending coach will propel Holtby to a next level. Now, I'm not saying Holtby will win a Vezina, but I feel his play will dramatically improve over the course of the season.

Justin Peters' presence will help as well, knowing that Peters is not going to jump in and steal the spotlight, but rather relieve Holtby of some pressure will keep things calm in Washington's crease.

Brodeur hasn't received the fanfare he was expecting when he hit free agency.

No contender really has any room for Brodeur, although he would be an intriguing fit in some cities that could use a little support in goal. The Caps, whether you think they are a contender or not, would be a nice fit if Brodeur understood that it was Holtby's crease to start the season. This, of course, goes into the whole scenario of Brodeur taking on the mentor role and the debate on whether-or-not he wants that role.

At this point, Brodeur has to take a back-up position on a team that has a chance at making the playoffs, and fill in when he is called upon. If the Caps feel they need his leadership and experience half-way through the season to give the team a boost, then absolutely make an offer. As of right now, however, I think the Caps need to stop over-addressing potential issues with the team until they see everyone in camp.

Brodeur, if not signed by then, will get invites to a few camps, and the Caps, I'm sure, will be one of those teams. They just have to be careful not to step on anyone's toes and create tension in the crease.

Or, Brodeur retires, which may be the best option for him.
