The Columbus Blue Jackets took care of some housekeeping today in signing forward Dana Tyrell to a contract extension.
The 25-year-old forward signed a one-year, two-way deal worth $650,000 if he plays in the NHL, according to TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie.
Tyrell, who has 24 points in 132 NHL games, spent most of last season in the AHL playing with Springfield and Syracuse. He combined for 33 points in 63 games at the AHL level, and was held pointless while owning 32% Corsi rating in seven NHL games.
While the sample size was small, that's incredibly poor. If you're unfamiliar with Corsi, it's simply shot attempts, so by controlling just 32% of the shot attempts that means 68% of the shots attempted when he was on the ice were going towards his net. That, well, isn't very good.
He's not a scorer, is undersized at 5'10" and has never reached the 50% mark in possession during any season at the NHL level.
Tyrell is way down on the depth chart, and realistically doesn't stand much of a chance of making the Blue Jackets roster, so this seems to be an AHL signing.
That said, should the Blue Jackets be absolutely decimated by injuries, it is nice to have some players in the system with NHL experience.
