I touched a little bit on just how good James Wisniewski is when looking at
how much better Ryan Murray was with him than without him, but I'm going to carry his water some more.
As good as Wisniewski is at 5 vs 5 - he drives possession against quality competition and puts up points - he's just as good on the man advantage.
He's quietly been elite at 5 vs 4 over the last couple seasons, and has established himself as one of the NHL's best power play defenseman.
Note: charted are the top-5 in 5 vs 4 points/60 from 2012-14 (minimum 300 minutes), as well as Erik Karsslon, Duncan Keith and P.K. Subban, three elite defensemen highly regarded in part for their power play excellence
When it comes down to straight efficiency during 5 vs 4 play, only Shea Weber has bettered Wisniewski's numbers over the last couple seasons. That's in large part due to Weber's high shooting percentage (he's shooting 10% higher than Wiz), though it's somewhat expected with a shot like he has.
Nevertheless, Wisniewski has obviously put up points at a very high rate. With him generating so many shot attempts, and many of the Blue Jackets' top offensive players still getting better, there's no reason to suggest he won't continue to produce at an elite clip moving forward.
