Sami Makes Nine and Very Random Thoughts

Yesterday the Ducks re-signed defenseman Sami Vatanen to a new contract. Vatanen's two year, $2.525M deal now gives the Ducks nine defensemen on the roster. Additionally, highly regarded, 2013 first round draft pick Shea Theodore is on the way. Unfortunately only six play in a given game.

As was accurately mentioned in the forums, GM Bob Murray said at the recent season ticket holders meeting that he expects Sheldon Souray's wrist injury to sideline him for the season. That must have been news to Souray because his comments indicate he wants to come back. Murray also said that he doesn't want to go into the season with eight blueliners. Something has to give. It going to be an interesting training camp.

Very Random Thoughts

If Souray does go, do we get to keep Kelly Kelly

Speaking of significant others, Rory McIroy breaks up with his tennis star fiance' Caroline Wozniacki and a few months later he wins the British Open. Now comes word that Aleander Ovechkin's engagement to tennis star Maria Kirilenko is over. Will there be a trend here?

Brian Boyle said he left the Rangers because he wanted a bigger on ice role. He signed a three year, $6M contract with the Lightning. Now he is behind Stamkos, Filppula and Tyler Johnson on the depth chart.

I have to give props to the Nashville Predators. They signed Mike Ribeiro, Derek Roy and Anton Volchenkov for a combined $3.05M for the upcoming season. Last year those three players earned $12.75M combined.

If you haven't read Paul McCann's blog yesterday, he made a very good point regarding the Winnipeg Jets. He said that the sum of their parts never seem to add up, that is absolutely correct.

After re-sining Vaatanen yesterday, the Ducks now have the 23rd highest payroll in the league.

Still no word on Ducks remaining RFAs Devante Smith-Pelly and Jakob Silfverberg.
