So the offers, (fan ones) are in and after going through 15 pages on comments I’ve pulled the ones I think are worth discussing. ‘Discussing’ being the operative word. One of the things that must be emphasized is more often than not fans overvalue assets on both sides of a deal. So while these deals are interesting talking points they are not likely to happen in my opinion and I’ll explain why in each case.

First, some thoughts on Kane.

He’s got talent, speed to burn, plays a physical game and can be used on short-handed situations. He brings one of the top wrist shots in the league and despite what Jets fans think, he does not only shoot from the top of the circles. What he has not been able to do is carry a line. He is a player who needs talent around him particulary players who can gain the offensive zone with control.

Evander Kane for Marchand and Boychuk.

Can Boychuk play the left side? Winnipeg has no problem with RHD on the roster and in their system after Enstrom on the left side it gets pretty thin. Boychuk is also a UFA and if he felt that he wanted to test the market it only makes sense for Winnipeg to take him on if he is flipped for a 1st rounder by the trade deadline. That first would probably be a below the 15th pick so is Marchand and a late first a good deal for Winnipeg? I think…err hope Chevy can do better.

Evander Kane for Yandle, Samuelsson and a 1st

This is a pretty tasty offer for the Jets and meets almost all the requirements that the team ‘apparently’ wants. A young top-4 d-man (who shoots left), prospect and a pick. In fact this deal might be too good and I could see the Jets having to sweeten it a bit on their end. The first question becomes what year is the first round pick in? If it’s 2015 I think Chevy has to sign this fast!! I don’t know if the Yotes make the playoffs and having 2 picks in the top 15 for 2015 could be huge. Samuelsson, who I do not know much about, seems like a decent prospect who has put up good numbers in junior. What happens to Clitsome though if this deal happens?

Evander Kane for Bailey, De Haan and a pick

This one is interesting and there have been more than a few murmurs that these two teams have had talks. If you are Garth Snow you are drooling at the chance of having Kane and Tavares on a line together, drooling. However this deal gets tricky with the pick going back to Winnipeg, what is it exactly. The Islanders do not have a 2015 first and would the Jets want to wait two years to realize something from a trade in the form of a draft pick? I’m also not so sure Bailey makes a ton of sense unless it’s simply salary savings. De Haan on the other hand is LHD and is intriguing. I see this one as a starting point if you throw in Grabner instead of the pick.

Evander Kane for Grabner and Reinhart

So how soon until Reinhart is playing in the NHL? That’s the question the Jets need to know if it’s next season or the one after this deal is tempting. Grabner comes in on the right side and again the left side for the Jets is a mess. The possibility of grabbing Reinhart though, a young defenseman may leave Chevy agog and unable to restrain himself.

Evander Kane for Brayden Schenn and a 2015 1st

Philly has long been rumoured to love Kane, and Buff and Bogo, but with Hextall in charge does he love any of them more than he loves Brayden Schenn. Sources who know Hextall (he is a MB guy) have said the Flyers GM has big plans for Schenn and knows him from his days in LA. Once again the 1st round pick would fall in the later half of the draft so what do you really get for Kane here? One story going around was that Hextall offered both Schenns at the draft and was turned down, like I said it’s a ‘story’ but could that not have been the start of something?

Evander Kane for Larsson, Ryder and Brunner

Ah… the classic quality for quantity deal. Ask Calgary how they liked that with Phaneuf. Actually this is a steaming pile of fresh turds. Why would the Jets take on 34 year old Ryder who is a UFA, Larsson who is not even listed on the Devils roster right now and UFA Brunner who is over paid at 2.5 million? It starts with Henrique or just ask Zajac if he wants to come back to Winnipeg and throw in a first.

So there you have it, the best of a lot of foolishness. That’s what fans do though and it’s fun and I understand how people arrive at lopsided deals. They want the best value for their team and it makes sense from a strategy point of view too. Why do you give up your best players to acquire a good player- isn’t the idea to keep adding good players without giving up any.

So thinking of that logic I take the Coyotes up on their deal and fast. They have prospects and can afford the loss of the first round pick this year. Only question remains is can the Jets retain Yandle in 2016 when he becomes a UFA, as it stands now they don’t have to worry about Kane until 2018.
