The St. Louis Blues added more forward depth to the organization today by signing Benn Ferriero to a one year, two-way contract. Many will look at this signing as a simple AHL signing, which is likely to be the case.

However, if there are injuries, Ferriero is a good piece to have in the American league. He's played 98 games in the NHL, the majority of those with San Jose. In that time he's scored 14 goals and 9 assists.

If there are injuries that requite a call up for the bottom six, Ferriero would be a good option. He's not the biggest guy, but he'll drop the gloves if need be. Some might actually remember him from his scrap with Blues defensemen Ian Cole. Cole stepped up into the neutral zone, and laid a shoulder into Ferriero. So the rest of the way up the ice, the two chatted, dropped the mitts, and had a pretty decent tussle.

Ferriero played last season in Vancouver's organization. He played in two games with the Canucks, going scoreless in both games. Yet in 54 games with the Utica Comets of the AHL, Ferriero notched 19 goals, 20 assists, for 39 points. Ferriero played most of his career in the San Jose organization, but also played in Pittsburgh organization, as well as the New York Rangers orgainzation as well.

Ferriero isn't a household name, but his defensive capabilities make him an option for a potential injury call up in the bottom six. It's a good depth signing that can help the AHL team score goals and add a veteran into the room, and it can also help by adding a guy who's been there before, who knows what to do and what to bring when called up.

He's not going to wow you in anyway, but it's a good signing by the Blues to bring him in on a two-way deal.
