QUICK HITS

* Best wishes for an enjoyable and safe Independence Day weekend to all of my American readers. I am returning to Texas today after spending a very enjoyable last week in my hometown to cover the 2014 NHL Draft and the start of the free agency period (which ended up being much more eventful for the Dallas Stars than for the Flyers). I would have liked to stay in Philly for an upcoming media lunch to honor retiring Flyers press box steward Gene Prince and then to cover the Development Camp and trial on the Isle but family obligations next week overlapped.

* The Flyers appear to be in a holding pattern in their efforts to trade Vincent Lecavalier for salary cap relief, which also hampers their ability to sign any of the remaining free agents in whom they are still interested. It sounds as if potential trade partners not only want the Flyers to pick up half of Lecavalier's remaining salary over the next four seasons, they also want either a draft pick asset or for Philly to take an unwanted salary back in the deal. The Flyers are currently $3.06 million over the salary cap ceiling for 2014-15.

* Per Capgeek.com, the two-way contract signed by Jason Akeson for next season carries a $575,000 ($25K above the NHL minimum for the 2014-15 season) at the NHL level. At the AHL level, his salary would increase from the $65,000 he made in each of his three entry-level contract seasons (not including three annual $90,000 signing bonus installments) to $175,000.

* TVA Sports reporter Mikael Lalance tweeted earlier this week that Rimouski Oceanic defenseman Beau Rusk (a teammate of Flyers' 2013 first-round pick Samuel Morin) will be among the unaffiliated invitees to the Flyers upcoming Development Camp in Voorhees. The 6-foot-3, 215 pound Rusk went unselected in the 2014 NHL Draft. Rusk posted 63 penalty minutes and 10 points in 42 games for Rimouski.
