Given that one of the only topics concerning the Calgary Flames of late are trade related, it should stand to reason that we discuss what these trades could look like for this group.

My latest discussions have been centered around veteran forward Mike Cammalleri, given that he is arguably their largest tradable asset at the moment. That said, we’ve been informed by the organization that Brian Burke and Cammalleri have actually been discussing extensions as well.

As I made it rather clear over Twitter a night or two ago, in addition to a response I provided in my Q&A blog from yesterday, I do not feel for one minute that these extension talks are anything more than a “Plan B”, or even “Plan C” between the two in the off chance that a deal can’t be made.

It is far too evident that the best route to take for both parties would be a trade. While it can be argued that certain veterans will be needed in order for the team to remain strong, I simply do not feel that Mike is that guy, at this stage in his career. That said, this extension talk is nothing more, in my opinion, than keeping Mike’s name out there and letting GM’s know that they are more than willing to sign him if they don’t get their asking price.

I was actually quite relieved when reading a recent interview from Burke yesterday with respect to trades. What he said, essentially, is that while the team is looking to remain competitive, that any moves made will be with a 10 year goal in mind. *Sigh of relief*

There is one thing that Burke has shown in his tenure as a GM, and that’s making hasty moves to try and speed up rebuilds. While this approach can work in your favor at times, it can also be quite risky and do anything (but) speed up said process.

It’s nice to know that Brian is sticking to his plan and rebuilding properly as he states “I’m also cognizant of the fact we’re going to be hiring a new GM and we’re going to keep as many options open for that GM as possible, too.”

What I read here, folks, is that the Flames are not likely to make any big splashes this year. Move Cammalleri, likely move Stempniak, but no big “hockey deals” as Brian expressed has been a recent discussion of his.

Although it will be a few tough years for Flames fans, given that the team is rebuilding, I think most of said fans can take comfort in knowing that their acting GM and organization are planning on doing things properly, while setting up a strong foundation for their future stars.

“It has to turn on what’s best long-term for the organization, not short-term. I’m not interested in short-term thinking. It has to be the best deal for the organization for the next 10 years,” he said.
