Team Canada’s eyebrows must have raised when Team USA tweeted earlier this morning that there will be a substantial roster change on the American blue line for today’s semifinal game between USA and Canada.
For some unknown reason, Dan Bylsma has had to erase Pittsburgh Penguins D Paul Martin’s name from the starting six D corps. Carolina Hurricane Justin Faulk will skate as the seventh D.
All due respect to Faulk, he’s not a minute-muncher like Martin is.
U.S. D for tonite’s semi vs. CAN: Fowler-Shattenkirk; Orpik-Carlson; Suter-McDonagh; Faulk. Quick in goal; Miller backup. #DawnsEarlyLight
The 32-year-old Martin has played very well alongside his Penguins bro Brooks Orpik in the Olympic tourney. He’s +2 in the tournament. He played north of 19 minutes USA’s 5-2 win over the Czechs in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Team USA and Canada have met 17 times in Olympic competition, with the most recent meeting coming in a classic gold-medal game at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The winner of this game will advance to Sunday's gold-medal contest and play either Sweden or Finland.
More to come….
