Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said Thursday that forward Alex Tanguay will undergo surgery on his hip Friday and will miss the remainder of the season.
Tanguay, 34, had four goals and seven assists in 16 games this season. He injured his knee and hip in a Nov. 2 game against Montreal and missed 37 games. He returned Jan. 24 and had a goal and an assist in three games but didn't play in the final five games before the Olympic break.
The Avalanche went 15-1-0 with Tanguay in the lineup.
"He was an important player, but at the same time I thought we did well without him," Roy said following the team's first practice since the NHL shut down for the Olympics. "You don't like to lose players like him, but it's part of the game. Every team is subject to situations like this.
"It's unfortunate for us, but it will give opportunities for other guys to take over and they've been doing really well. It's always a challenge to replace a player like him, but it's a chance for us to finish the season well."
