Thanks to PHWA pool reporter, Wayne Fish of the Bucks County Courier Times, for this interview with the newest Flyer, defenseman
Braydon Coburn, obtained late last night from Atlanta for
Alexei Zhitnik:
Q- One thing Paul Holmgren talked about was your skating ability. Could you talk about your game?
A- I try to move the puck quick and get up and down the ice and make plays. I constantly work on trying to get better offensively. Obviously reading different guys and adapting to the defensive side of the game.
Q- Braydon, are you encouraged that Paul said you’re going to play Tuesday night against the Islanders? It must be gratifying to know they have enough faith in you to throw you right in.
A- Absolutely, I’m really excited about it. Anytime you play in the NHL it’s a good feeling. I was with Chicago (AHL) a little bit and with Atlanta this year, so it’s nice to be back.
Q- we were told Atlanta has a veteran defense corps and that for whatever reason, it was difficult for you to crack that. Agree?
A- I was trying to earn my ice time and some of the games I got more and some I got less. They’re obviously in a tough race now and kind of relying on the guys they think are going to get them there.
Q- Excited about the prospect of coming to a team that can use your services?
A- Any time you’re wanted it’s very exciting. It seems like this organization is focused on bringing a great team together and I’m excited to be a part of it.
Q - You played for Chicago 2 years ago against the Phantoms in the Calder Cup finals. Do you know any of these guys on the Flyers, like Carter, Richards, Niittymaki?
A -I know Carter and Richards, I played with them with Team Canada in the World Juniors. I was with those guys quite a bit for two years. I was with Carter in Russia for 18s. I was actually his roommate in Slovakia for the Under 17s. I know
Scottie Upshall a little bit. So I know some of those guys.
Q- Richards was wearing a big grin last night. Does that mean anything?
A- Richards is a good guy. He’s a real good leader. It was fun playing with him when I played with him for Team Canada.
Q - You’re 6-5, 220. Do you have an edge to your game when you need it?
A- I try to play tough. I try to play with an edge. Obviously that gives myself a little more room out there. That’s something I’m working on, contributing to my game.
Q -I read you’re from Calgary. What was your upbringing, how did you get into hockey?
A- I was actually was just born in Calgary. I grew up in a small town in Saskatchewan, 1,200 people. I was on the ice as much as I wanted because the rink was pretty much open all the time. Played probably on a team that had 11 or 12 guys until I was 14. Then I went to Northern College…same place as
Vincent Lecavalier,
Brad Richards and Wendel Clark. It’s a private Catholic school, kind of a hockey recruiter . . . prep school. Then played for Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL.
Q-Talk about John Stevens. Do you know him at all, working knowledge? Did you talk to him yet?
A- We talked, just said hi. I played for him one game last year at the AHL All-Star game. He was our coach. I’ve met him before, in that game at Winnipeg.
Q-What if they pair you with Pitkanen?
A- I’ve seen this team quite a bit on TV and he’s a great player. Whoever they put me with, I’m going to try to give it my all.
