Flip, Flop and Fly`

The Nashville Predators dropped a 3-1 decision to the Vancouver Canucks last night. It was a typical ‘Nucks/Preds contest, both teams playing a reaction game, Ryan Kesler scoring two, Roberto Luongo flopping around like a fish on a line and Pred Nation leaving Bridgestone Arena frustrated. Don’t get me wrong… Vancouver deserved the win, they outworked the Predators for most of the second half of the game, winning the board battles and most of the 50/50 pucks… so it goes without saying that the flopping going on in the Vancouver crease was unnecessary at best. Luongo is too good of a goaltender to do that… and NHL referees are too good to fall for it.

But that was not the case on two different plays in the third period of a tie game last night. Matt Hendricks brushed into Luongo, who dropped like he was taken down by a sniper… and was rewarded for his theatrics with a power play. Then, a little more than three minutes later, Canucks d-man Dan Hamhuis pushed Patric Hornqvist into the Vancouver netminder, who dropped again, and was rewarded again. This time, a power play goal effectively put the game away for the visitors.

You know it is bad when the Canucks Twitter feed even comments on Luongo, saying that he “wins an Emmy for that flop.” It’s a shame that such a good goaltender feels they need to resort to such silly tactics, but it’s hard to blame him… especially when he gets rewarded for doing it.

The Predators finish their home stand tomorrow night against the Hurricanes.
