Question from Canuckfan2006: Pavelski's shootout goal..should not have counted! He stopped...then proceeded.

It's times like this that I think of the Russian coach from The Cutting Edge as he explains the Pomchenko Twist. "Legano...Illegano....It's grey area!" said in my best Russian accent.

The rule used to be that the puck couldn't stop its forward progression. They recently update the rules to say that a player couldn't stop on his way towards the net. To me, what Pavelski did is the equivalent of rolling through a stop sign. He greatly reduced his speed, but did not come to a complete stop. It's all in how you - or in this case the referee - interpret the rules. Grey area.

Question from Billymurray12: Can you see a Winnipeg/Philly trade involving Byfuglien & Kane for the Schenn's?

I asked in the comments if there was more to this proposed trade or if he was just throwing out names for consideration, but didn't get a reply so.....

As is, there's no way this happens. While I think interest in moving Brayden Schenn is open to discussion, he is not a stand alone piece if you're expecting anything major in return. I am willing to bet that there isn't one NHL GM out there saying "You know who I'd really like on my team?? Brayden Schenn!" Not one. If he's part of a package, sure, but not the main component. Luke is a non starter....he has one point, plays the bare minimum for a defenseman and is way too much of a liability. To say that he has underachieved, is an understatement. On the flip side, the Jets are a club looking to make the playoffs for the first time in eight years. The only way they're trading Kane and especially Byfuglien is if they're mathematically eliminated by the Trade Deadline and are getting something above market value. Otherwise, I don't see it happening.

Question from jbclark: As you know the Flames are in rebuild mode. We know Backlund is on the trade block but won't be given away. Cammalleri is the most enticing after that. Where do you think he goes and what kind of return do you see for him knowing he's a UFA after this season?

First of all, I'd like to think no player will simply be "given away". Second, Mike Cammalleri is an interesting bird because he can really only excel on a team that plays his style of run-and-gun hockey. While he's not a defensive liability, his strengths revolve around his speed and a tight-checking, defensive-oriented team is not the team for him. He needs to be on a high powered offense that is constantly forcing turnovers and rushing up ice. That mixed in with his ginormous contract for very little offensive output in comparison makes him a really hard sell, even as a rental. Should he be traded, the Flames won't get too much in return - maybe a depth player and a conditional draft pick - if he's moved at all.

Question by jaumiller: Will you please blog for the sabres like full time?

That would be a negative, but I can commit to at least one Sabres blog a month....if you're nice, maybe more. ;)

Question from Lindeblom: Are there any studies on how much of the net goalies cover today compared to 15-20 years ago (or even further).

Saw the Canes vs Canucks the other day, and I could hardly see any place where the puck might pass Eddie Lack in the Canuck's goal.

When I watch highlights of Roy, Hasek etc there are soooooooo much space they cant cover it almost makes me want to cry thinking of the old (and better) days.

Not that I'm aware of, but I feel the same way and I think it's two-fold - changes in the position and increased padding for protection. Now, the goalie position is so calculated and controlled. Back in the day, the goalies were flailing about...it was almost like it was a crap shoot. I'm just going to throw my arm out, flop onto the ice, bicycle kick and hope I stop the puck along the way. In addition, there was no special goalie equipment except for gloves, helmet and the pads on their legs. Now, they wear a sort of armor. Good for them! I'm not looking to change it, but you can't even begin to tell me that goalies of today have a more difficult job than in the past.

Question from rowinski: Will the USA win a medal this Olympics despite the stiff Group A competition?

Regardless of who they're playing, I will always think Team USA has a chance to medal and that's not just my American pride talking. There are legitimately six teams that have a chance to medal - Canada, Cezch Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and USA. To count any of those teams out before the tournament even starts is foolish.

Question from rmiethaner: I forgot the combination to my safe. I know that the following four clues does apply to the combination:

1. The number has four digits (ex 1234 or 9876)
2. All the digits are different
3. It begins and ends with an odd number and has two even numbers in the middle
4. 19 and 519 go into it exactly

Can you please help me with the combination?

Thanks.

9861. You're welcome :)

Tomorrow, I'll answer the questions that were tweeted or emailed. If you have more hockey related questions or mathematical word problems you want to throw my way, you know how to reach me!\

***EDIT: Scratch that bit about answering more questions tomorrow, I'll answer them on Thursday. Tomorrow I'm writing about Team USA's preliminary WJC roster.
