A Different Culture Change

The Flyers hockey culture is about to change.

Peter Luukko resigned Monday as Comcast-Spectacor president and Flyers president.

The hockey side of the team and the organization will be very different now.

Luukko was a hockey player and a businessman. He bled the sport. He was actively involved in player acquisitions, trades, evaluation, everything on the hockey ops side besides being the shrewd businessman who helped Ed Snider and Comcast grow and become a billion-dollar corporation.

He was the point man for just about every business venture Comcast-Spectacor got involved in. Whatever Luukko touched, turned to gold.

And now he's gone to pursue other entrepreneurial activities.

Who's the buffer now between Ed Snider and GM Paul Holmgren? There is none. At least, none who has a hockey background and can speak one-on-one with Snider from a businessman as his equal.

“I found out this morning,” Snider told me today.

“I’ve had better days and I was surprised, but at the same time, after having a discussion with Peter, I understand where he is coming from.”

Snider said if Luukko has another job waiting for him, he didn't share it.

When I spoke to Luukko tonight he said he wanted to "make another run" at something in business. He wants another challenge, but first, he wants to relax a little and enjoy the money he just made by cashing out in the companies he created for the Comcast-Spectacor empire.

Everything changes from this point on for the Flyers.
