Isles win wild one; Strome's wild night

Like I've said all year the Islanders are if anything always entertaining. In a game where the Isles trailed by two goal twice, they continued to rally and won 5-4 in a shootout. They survived yet another shaky start from Evgeni Nabokov who was not good during regulation but saved his best for the shootout stopping all three attempts. The defense was ok; Andrew MacDonald had a dreadful turnover leading to the first Senators goal.

Without doubt though the offense bailed the team out as the Islanders had an amazing 57 shots on goal. While Thomas Vanek was stopped on a breakaway in overtime he was far better than his debut earlier in the week and his assist on John Tavares' goal was a thing of beauty.

I also really like the play of Brock Nelson as he has appeared to have sparked the fourth line. Casey Cizikas and Matt Martin look to be back in form and Nelson has played a large role in that.

Without doubt though the play of Frans Nielsen has been outstanding. He has really elevated his play and has consistently been the best forward on the Islanders this season. If the Islanders can just manage average play on defense and get some solid goaltending they will win games.

In the AHL last night Mike Halmo had four points and Ryan Strome had a 2 goal, 3 assist, 5 point night as the Sound Tigers broke out with a 7-1 win over the Worchester Sharks. Let's hope Bridgeport can turn their season around and build off this one.

The Islanders are right back on the ice again tonight as they host the Boston Bruins. I would expect Kevin Poulin to be between the pipes and I will update this page if their are any changes. As always for more on all things hockey please follow me on twitter at @DanDanNoodles78.
