More bad news for Pittsburgh Penguins tender Tomas Vokoun. The veteran puck stopper will be will be out out the lineup for 3-6 months after undergoing a procedure to dissolve a blood clot in his pelvis in September.

The Penguins are holding theor breath and praying that Marc Andre Fleury is rehabilitated from his awful 2013 playoff performance when he was pulled and replaced by the more competent Vokoun.

Did you know that Daniel Alfredsson faced the Buffalo Sabres in his first NHL game 17 years ago?

True that.

"
I remember we lost," Alfredsson said, smiling. "3-1."

Alfredsson-Weiss-Franzen will be a hard to handle unit for the Sabres tonight.

Mike Babcock sees as having awesome promise:

"It has the making of a real good line," Babcock said. "Obviously, Mule is the key, the driving force to that unit. He's a dominant player and can be a dominant player. We've got to get him to go every day. If he goes every day, it makes it way easier for Alfie and Weiss to do what they do.”

Pens GM, Ray Shero, shared Vokoun's prognosis this morning.

“Physically he’s doing great. Mentally he’s doing great, which is good news,” general manager Ray Shero said. “(Vokoun) will be on blood thinning medicine. During this time he’s OK to workout and do everything except play hockey. We’ll evaluate this as we go along.

“The most important thing for Tomas and for us is his short-term health and long-term health. He’s in good hands.”

Vokoun, who has been placed on long-term injured reserve, will be evaluated after three months to check his progress to see when or if he can return to the ice. But at this point in time, Vokoun’s focus isn’t on his career.

“Right now I’m not thinking about my career or playing hockey, I’m more worried about long-term health,” Vokoun, 37, said. “I’ve gotten great care from the doctors and the team. Top professionals are giving me advice.

“I know where I stand. I’m going with the short term. Three months is a minimum. After that I’ll evaluate where I am. The doctors will monitor my health and progress. Then I’ll make my decision then.”

Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller should be more motivated than ever before to get his season started on a winning way. A hot start may earn Miller a phone call from Shero if Fleury falls flat on his face again in the first 20 games of the snew season.

The final year of Miller's contract clicks to the "on" position today. He will be UFA on July 1, 2014.

The Pens would have to pay a pretty penny in order to acquire a #1 goalie of Miller's ilk.

Miller, 33, is said to be seeking a long term deal for 4-5 years and $6.5-$7 million per season.

You are kidding yourself if you think that Sidney Crosby isn't going to be consulted by Shero on the Pens' goaltending crisis. Do you honestly think that Shero wants to upset his star by signing a wing but like Bryzgalov?
