In an effort to get down to the 23-man roster limit before their game Thursday evening, the New Jersey Devils have placed defenseman Alex Urbom on waivers.

Urbom, 22, had a strong camp with the Devils but, due to the depth on defence, wasn't able to earn a roster spot.

Lou Lamoriello recently placed Patrik Elias on IR and Mattias Tedenby on the non-roster injury list to get down to the 23-man roster limit before Monday's deadline. Lamoriello did so because by waiting until all rosters were finalized, Urbom and any other player on waivers stand a better chance of clearing due to teams lacking open roster spots and/or cap space.

Whether Urbom clears waivers and is assigned to Albany or is claimed by another team, this means the Devils have an open roster spot to activate Elias off IR making him eligible to play in the Devils season opener.

As someone who also covers the Vancouver Canucks, it wouldn't shock me if they claimed Urbom. He's a better option than the likes of Andrew Alberts, Ryan Stanton and company, in my opinion.
