Perhaps the most important task for Mike Gillis and the Vancouver Canucks is locking up Henrik and Daniel Sedin.

The two sides have talked extension several times throughout the last few weeks in hopes of getting contract extensions done before the season.

The Canucks open the season in five days and the Sedin twins could be locked up before then if ownership decides to pull the trigger, according to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet.

Kypreos reports the two sides have exchanged proposals and if the Canucks accept the latest proposal from the Sedins, new deals could be in place before the season begins.

I think the Canucks definitely need to re-sign the Sedins, but they should be cautious to a) not give out too much term (7-8) years and; b) make sure the cap hits aren't unreasonable. If Gillis and company hand out a max length deal, they should make sure it brings down the cap hit.

The Sedins are great players, but they're not getting any younger. At 33, both of them probably have a few all-star caliber seasons. That said, even with their finesse style of play I doubt they'll be putting up 70+ points in their late 30's.

As a matter of fact, I believe their decline has already started.

After their huge seasons in 2010-11, they've been on a steady decline since. Neither of them have averaged a point per game or more since and in a year or two there probably won't be much chance of doing so.

As I've said, the Canucks should re-sign the twins. Gillis just needs to be careful not to pay for the past and pay them what they're worth now.
