The New Jersey Devils have cut their roster down to 28 players.

Today the Devils announced that they've assigned Scott Wedgewood, Stefan Matteau, Mike Sislo, Rod Pelley, Tim Sestito, Brandon Burlon, Eric Gelinas and Jon Merrill to Albany. The team also announced they've sent defenseman Damon Severson back to the Kelowna Rockets (WHL).

Of the bunch, Gelinas is the only player that I was surprised to see sent down. Merrill had a pretty good camp and has a very bright future, but he has next to no pro experience and some time in Albany could really help him.

Gelinas, on the other hand, looked good in preseason - especially on the power play. He did have some defensive lapses at times, though, so starting the season in Albany may not be the worst thing in the world.

There's still a chance the Devils move a body or two before the season begins and recall Gelinas.

Meanwhile, here's a look at the remaining players in Devils camp.
