Sorry, for the late blog today; had to deal with the sudden passing of a close friend and a true hockey fan: John J. "Jack" Ford, 1936-2013, may he rest in peace.

Again, it's so hard to use the preseason as a measuring stick. Playing mostly prospects and rookies last night against a Penguin roster that included Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang, the Hawks lost 3-2 in OT.

Bryan Bickell had two goals for the Hawks.

Eight players are headed to Rockford (AHL) after last night's game: Drew LeBlanc, Terry Broadhurst, Phillip Danault, Byron Froese, Kyle Beach, Antti Raanta, Brad Mills and Maxim Shalunov (the latter two on tryouts).

That leaves 28 players in camp, with 9 players essentially—Brad Winchester, Jimmy Hayes, Jeremy Morin, Brandon Pirri, Joakim Nordstrom, Ryan Stanton, Theo Peckham, Mike Kostka and Ben Smith—competing for three roster spots. The slog is more uphill for the defensemen, where one can only hope for an injury or to beat out last year's #7 d-man, Sheldon Brookbank. The remaining six forwards are competing for three roster spots.

Presently, I'd put my money on Smith, Morin and Nordstrom.

More as I have it,

JJ
