For all the promise 6'4" Alex Petrovic shows from time to time, apparently he is not ready for the big show just yet.

GM Dale Tallon and head coach Kevin Dineen decided to leave Petrovic in San Antonio with the Rampage before they left Texas to continue their preseason swing. Many believed, myself included, that Petrovic was likely going to be on the Panthers opening night roster.

But inconsistent play and lack of fire cost him his spot for the time being, and surely the youngster is not too pleased about he situation.

“Alex’s play did not dictate him staying with the club for opening night," said Dineen. "We could have kept him around and worked with our staff, but he’s in good hands in San Antonio. He’ll keep progressing.’’

Petrovic played in six games as a Panther last season. He had no points and was a -8.

The Panthers are pleased with the veterans in camp, and it looks as if Tom Gilbert, Mike Mottau, or Matt Gilroy will be joining Colby Robak on the opening night roster. Depth was a major issue during last season's injury-laden campaign. To know Petrovic will be one of the first defensive call ups is a good situation for the Cats, as an angry Petrovic is an effective player.

Vincent Trocheck still remains with the team, and the staff will have some very tough decisions to make as far as him staying with the club. Sean Bergenheim's recovery from a groin injury might have everything to do Trocheck's chances of making the club. Quinton Howden was also apparently injured during last night's game against Tampa, so his situation needs to be monitored as well.

The Panthers are 2-1-2 so far this preseason, and not surprisingly the two overtime losses came via shootout. That HAS to improve for this team that is statistically far and away the worst shootout organization in the league. They have two remaining preseason games against Tampa Thursday and Sunday.
