An update for my readers:
Eklund and the admin staff have provided me with the opportunity to take on more blogs here at HockeyBuzz which I am greatful for. I will be continuing to write on a full time basis for the Flames, but will also write a few pieces on the Leafs as well.

There will be no interruptions in my Flames content, as we discussed that it remains my number one priority here, and I hope you have all noticed my commitment to the site since starting over a year ago. Since my first few guestblogs which I wrote for the Flames, the interest in the blog has risen quite a bit and is now one of the more popular reads on the site!

I'd like to thank all my readers so far and welcome any new ones as I start assisting Mike with some Leafs articles. Mike has been doing a solid job in his coverage and I will not be competing with him, it will be nothing more than to provide more content for the site.

Thanks again, and happy reading!

The Calgary Flames have just announced that Mark Giordano has been named as the 19th captain in franchise history. The 29 year old defenseman will embark with the Flames on a journey through a rebuild which should present many challenges, but also growth as a team.

Not surprisingly, Mike Cammalleri and Curtis Glencross will sport A’s as assistance captains this year and the three veteran players will do their best to help steer this team into contention once again.

Undrafted into the NHL, Giordano knows what it takes to battle for a spot on an NHL roster and further, what it takes to be a professional. He has now played six full seasons with the Flames and has registered 150pts in 358 games as a member of the organization. Giordano, though at times quiet, has been credited to possess very strong leadership skills both on and off the ice.

As previously mentioned, Giordano and his wife are spokespeople for Habitat for Humanity. The Flames organization honoured him for his work with Habitat for Humanity in addition to the Flames Foundation for Life by naming him the recipient of the J. R. "Bud" McCaig Award in 2012.

“Mark represents all the qualities that we set as a coaching staff and an organization,” said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley in a statement. “He is a quality man who is proud to represent the Calgary Flames both on and off the ice.

“We are very happy with these three men leading and setting the example for our team, and especially our young players, as we move through this crucial yet exciting period in the history of the Flames franchise.” NBC Sports
