The Dallas Stars were unable to hold four separate one-goal or two-goal leads and fell 6-5 via shootout to the St. Louis Blues in last night's preseason opener against the St. Louis Blues at the American Airlines Center.
Making his exhibition season debut for Dallas, 2013 first-round pick Valeri Nichushkin notched a pair of goals in a losing cause. Erik Cole, Tyler Seguin (power play) and Kevin Connauton also scored for the Stars. Maxim Lapierre notched two goals for St. Louis, while Sebastian Wannstrom,
Adam Cracknell and Ryan Reaves had individual tallies. Vladimir Tarasenko converted the lone skills competition goal for either side, winning the game for the Blues in the shootout.
Jake Allen went the distance in goal for the Blues, stopping 33 of 38 shots during regulation and overtime and then denying Jamie Benn, Seguin and Nichushkin in succession in the shootout. Dan Ellis (16 saves on 18 shots) and Jack Campbell (14 saves on 17 shots) split the game in net for the Stars.
The Stars return to action on Wednesday night when they play host to the Florida Panthers at the American Airlines Center.
