With the Vancouver Canucks wanting to get younger and recent news that David Booth still hasn't been cleared to play, things are lining up for Nicklas Jensen.
The 20-year-old winger has developed quite nicely since being selected 29th overall in the 2011 NHL entry draft. He had a good season in Sweden last year - he scored 17 goals in 50 games - and after a good showing at the Young Stars tournament, the next step for him is to make the jump to the NHL.
For Jensen, there's no better time to do it than now. The Canucks front office said all summer long that they wanted to insert some youth into their lineup and give the kids a chance to play, and Jensen is among the beneficiaries of that.
The Canucks top-9 has some question marks with Booth's injury problems and Kassian's inconsistent play over the last couple years. Jensen could earn a roster spot, potentially in the top-6, with a good preseason.
He'll definitely have to earn it as nothing will be given, especially under John Tortorella, but Jensen will get a long look from the team.
Jensen has a nice mix of speed, skill and at 6'3, he can handle himself when competing against bigger bodies. I think he's capable of making the team this year and I think he will.
It'll be fun to see how all of this plays out.
