Lou Lamoriello and the New Jersey Devils did a lot of off-season shopping this summer, but they may not be done just yet.
Unrestricted free agent Damien Brunner is talking with a few teams and one of them may be the Devils, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
Brunner, 27, scored 12 goals and recorded 26 points in 44 regular season games with the Red Wings. He upped his game in the playoffs as he scored five times and collected nine points in 14 games.
The Devils have a hole in their top-9 and almost $4 million in cap space, so they can certainly afford to sign Brunner if they believe he's a fit.
I think the most likely scenario is that the Devils test out some of their young players for the vacancy in the top-9. If nobody steps up, I could see Lamoriello turning to Brunner. The Devils have the cap space, as I said, and under new ownership there are no financial restrictions.
It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. Personally, I like the idea of signing Brunner as I believe he's a quality NHLer and the best is yet to come.
